Course Outline: 4 modules, including laws and safety objectives
Module 1 ‐ Laws that relate to weapons and the use of deadly force
Module 2 ‐ Handgun use and safety, use of restraint holsters and methods to ensure secure carrying of openly carried handguns
Module 3 – Non‐violent dispute resolution
Module 4 ‐ Proper storage practices for handguns with an emphasis on eliminating the possibility of accidental injury to a child
Written DPS LTC Examination and Proficiency Demonstration will be given at the end of the course
Objectives:
• Identify places where a hand gun may/may not be carried by a license holder
• Identify the signs that may apply to license holders including 51%, 30.06 and 30.07, and 46.15(o) signs
• State the possible outcomes for carrying a handgun while intoxicated
• Understand the reciprocity and unilateral agreements function and
resources available to determine which states are reciprocal/unilateral
• Be familiar with the laws in Penal Code Chapter 9 related to LTC and the use of force
• Understanding the terms: reasonable, necessity
• Understand when the use of deadly force can be justified
• Understand the considerations for license holders during interactions with law enforcement
• Knowledge of: Basic safety rules related to handguns
• Knowledge of: Basic operation of a handgun
• Knowledge of: Use of holsters and restraints
• Define situational awareness
• Identify effective communication skills
• Identify barriers that prevent effective communication skills
• Identify and understand the three ego states
• Identify the importance of safe storage of a handgun
• Identify types of storage options available
• Understand the penalties for making a firearm accessible to a child
• Understand the responsibilities and consequences when handguns are made available to anyone other than those who should have access
